Ten years ago, freezing rain and ice pellets battered eastern Ontario and western Quebec for days, encasing the region in heavy sheets of ice during a winter ice storm that Environment Canada called the "worst ever to hit Canada in recent memory."
From Jan. 5 to 10, 1998, more than 85 millimetres of freezing precipitation fell on Ottawa, 73 millimetres on Kingston, 108 on Cornwall and 100 millimetres in Montreal.
The massive load of ice toppled the region's power and phone lines, utility poles and electrical transmission towers.
More than one million households lost power, some for many days. At least 25 people died from causes such as hypothermia.
Trees fell on houses and cars, farms lost their animals and 14,000 Canadian troops were deployed to help residents and clean up the damage.

We want to hear your stories. What impact did the ice storm have on your own life? How did you make it through, and what did it mean for your relationship with your neighbours?
